The May unemployment report cannot be categorized as anything but disappointing and alarming. Disappointing in that the number of new jobs created last month was reported at 54,000, well below reduced expectations, with 83,000 generated in the private sector and a loss of 29,000 jobs in the government sector. The latter continues to reflect the downsizing and attrition in the local government sector due to ongoing fiscal pressures. The numbers for May are the lowest level of new job creation since October of last year and far below the average of over 200,000 jobs created over the March-April period of this year. ...
